Briefing on COP17 held at the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change of Brazil

On September 18, at the initiative of the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia, a briefing dedicated to the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), to be held in Yerevan, took place at the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change of Brazil.

On the Brazilian side, the briefing was attended by Executive Secretary of the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change Anna Flávia Franco, other senior officials of the Ministry, representatives of relevant departments, and experts.

Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to Brazil Armen Yeganian presented Armenia’s main approaches and priorities as the COP17 Presidency, emphasizing the importance of the principles of continuity, inclusiveness, transparency, and shared responsibility.

Ambassador Yeganian also addressed the political and substantive significance of hosting COP17 for Armenia, noting that holding the Conference in Armenia represents an important opportunity to contribute to the practical implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and to the transition from international commitments to measurable results. In this context, reference was also made to the First Global Review of progress in the implementation of the Global Framework, which is expected to take place within the framework of COP17.

During the discussion, the potential for cooperation between Armenia and Brazil on the biodiversity agenda was also highlighted. Taking into account Brazil’s exceptional biodiversity, its experience in international environmental processes, and Armenia’s COP17 Presidency, the importance of continuing professional exchanges and the sharing of experience was emphasized.

Ambassador A. Yeganian reaffirmed the readiness of the Armenian side to cooperate closely with the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change of Brazil both during the preparatory period for COP17 and throughout the Conference, with a view to contributing to the active and high-level participation of the Brazilian side.

The briefing also included a question-and-answer session, during which the participants exchanged views on substantive and organizational issues related to COP17, the participation of the Brazilian side, as well as opportunities for further cooperation.
