“The first International Congress on Genocide, crimes against humanity and human rights” was held

On April 28-29, in São Paulo, “The first International Congress on Genocide, crimes against humanity and human rights” was held with the support of the Armenian Embassy in Brazil, as well as the organization of “UGAB” Brazil (AGBU) and the Catholic University of São Paulo. The two-day conference with international participation was dedicated to the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

Reputable experts, human rights defenders and researchers from Brazil, Argentina, the United States and other countries participated in the conference. During the congress, human rights violations that have occurred in the past and present, mechanisms for preventing genocide, as well as the role of the international community in combating such crimes were discussed.

The opening speech at the conference was delivered by Ambassador of Armenia to Brazil Armen Yeganian, as well as Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Northern Arizona University Alexander Alvarez.

In his speech, the Ambassador touched upon the atrocities committed against the Armenian people in the last years of the Ottoman Empire, noting that the Republic of Armenia continues to actively engage in initiatives aimed at the identification and early warning of such crimes, as well as the prompt response, prevention and elimination of atrocities.

A. Yeganian emphasized that Armenia attaches great importance to the issue of genocide prevention and actively raises this issue within the framework of various UN procedures, including the UN Universal Periodic Review (UPR). In addition, Armenia periodically initiates resolutions on the prevention of genocides within the framework of the United Nations.
